A human being is part of a whole, called by us the Universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings, as something separated from the rest a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circles of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty - Albert Einstein
One of the great things about the internet is the free stuff, not to mention all the free downloadable things that were not free in the first place but since the internet community is such a generous people...we can get it all for free (who said chivalry is dead).
But today I'm not promoting the pirate stuffs. I'm listing useful things that is actually given for free. (I love the internet).
Free Integrated Develepement Entvironment (IDE), this is the software apllication that is used by computer programmer to build other software application. It helps you build your own application (if you know how). During my undergraduates years I used my housemate pirated version (not that I'm proud of the action) but getting a free licence IDE were quite hard those days. (I'm starting to sound like an old hag). Here are a few IDE's that are given for free, for student this things is really useful.
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition - who said Microsoft is stinky, here they are giving things for free. The Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition is the newest edition that can be downloaded and use for free for all the casual programmers or student out there. The not so express edition will cost you, but this express edition cost you naught. You just need to register online and get the activation code via email. (for free). The Express Edition basically consist of 5 different products that you can download separately:
Java Netbeans IDE - Java programer love this. Java SE Development Kit (JDK) allow you to create lots-lots of beans (I don't how this come about but in other word it mean software apllication)the way you like it using Java. Or if you happen to use one of the open software like OpenOffice this will allowed you to customize your software according to your need.
Need free Operating System (OS)...well you can try Ubuntu Linux based free OS or join the Open Solaris community which is sponsored by Sun Microsystem.
OpenOffice - with dreams to rival Microsoft Office, this free version of office suite is not a bad competitor at all, for those who have quite a minimal need for the this kind of software, you can give this a try.
Enterprise Management System (ERP) and Point of Sales (POS) - Company running a business would love having things for free, especially those little enterprises. This few open source ERP and POS software that you can donwload and use for free (no!... it's not a trial version)
Adempiere - this is a complete set of business solution, a quite comprehensive solution if I must say not to mention with great support group that can help you starting from the installation process up to the end user's need.
ProffittCenter - it's a free Point Of Sales (POS) software. It's easy to install and use. The donwside however is it's not platform free. It was build to serve only on Window based system. Not to mention it has Window Vista compatibility issue. It runs well on previous version like XP but not on Vista. (Since it is an open system...if you have the knowledge you can tweak the code so the application suit your need). They have forum community to help you with issues regarding the software.
My new hobby yet the very bane of my existance right now...the OpenBravo ERP and POS software -free easy to install, use and tweak around. Based on Java, this software is platform independent. Not to mention it has a sleek design, nice on your eyes.
Barcode Generator - In era where most of the purchase is made with a barcode product, for a shop owner, you will want to generate your own barcode for products that doesn't have barcode encode to it's box. Well you can try the online Barcode Generator. It's free
P/S: All these open software will continue to evolve and you can join to party of free stuff to enjoy out there. You don't have to worry about having to fork money to buy the latest edition because it is given to you for free!
If you love something let it go free. If it doesn't come back, you never had it. If it comes back, love it forever. - Doug Horton
