Writing for Rights

I began revolution with 82 men. If I had to do it again, I do it with 10 or 15 and absolute faith. It does not matter how small you are if you have faith and plan of action.- Fidel Castro

There is a project which will take place on 9 December 2006 called 'Write for Rights' under Amnesty International. Its a letter marathon that everyone in the world can participate...here is some information about it.

24 Hour Global Letter Writing Marathon

Writing Letters

Sending letters is one of the most effective ways for individuals to communicate their concerns to people responsible for violating human rights and to those in positions to influence their actions. When you write a response to an Amnesty International Appeal, you join tens of thousands of other people in a worldwide campaign. A steady stream of letters does have an effect on governments. We know of many prisoners of conscience, who have been released or saved from torture and human rights violations or even possible death stopped because of these letters.Letters are usually sent to heads of governments as well as to ministers and other people of influence in the country. In the letters, we raise our concerns about human rights violations on a particular case in that country and call on the government to take action to end the violations.

About the Marathon
This letter writing marathon was initiated by Amnesty International Poland in 2002 and since then every year around International Human Rights Day thousands of people from around the world, including those in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas take part in this marathon. Last year, people in over 33 countries in 6 continents wrote an incredible 27, 700 appeal letters in a 24-hour period and in Malaysia, AI members from around the country wrote 1,800 letters. This year we are targeting 2000 written letters. We would like to mobilize our members and the general public to sign up for this marathon, to read about the issues in our appeals and then to take action by writing letters during the 24 hours. We also hope that individuals would then be interested to get involved in letter writing on a continuous basis throughout the year.

How does the Marathon work
The marathon starts at 12pm on the 9th of December and we keep writing for 24 hours. It ends at 12pm on 10th December. You can write letters anytime during this period. You can come join us, at the venue, to write letters or get together with some of your friends, anywhere, and write letters or write from home· Letters can be written on cases found on this website. For more cases you can check out our Worldwide Appeals page at http://web.amnesty.org/appeals/active If you want we can also send the cases to you via e-mail. · For those writing for the first time we will also send you a letter writing guide. We also suggest you use an aerogramme for each letter as they are the cheapest and most convenient method of mailing (RM0.50 sen)· After you finish writing and mailing you need to provide feedback to the AI office on how many letters were written and on what cases. Then we will provide this information to AI Poland who will give us the global tally

For those who are interested please go to Amnesty Malaysia or to sign up for the marathon go to Write for Rights.
