I believe not many out there know about Hospis Malaysia. It is an non-profitable more towards charitable organization that offers palliative care to patients who are suffering from life-limiting illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, motor neurone disease or multiple sclerosis.

What does 'Palliative Care' Mean?
Palliative care is sometimes referred to as comfort care or hospice care, palliative care is a comprehensive approach to treating serious illness with a focus on keeping dying patients comfortable through pain control and addressing psychological, social, and spiritual concerns, instead of treating the disease.

What does the organization do?
Hospis Malaysia mission is to provide the best quality of Palliative Care, in doing so it hopes to relief, prevent pain dan suffering to the person and family of patients with life-limiting illnesses.

How do they achieve that?
Hospis Malaysia help by assisting the training and education of health professionals in the necessary skills of Palliative Care to provide relief of suffering that affects patients and their families in order to provide the best possible palliative care services based on their needs depending on the human and financial resources available to Hospis Malaysia. Other than that they also help by promoting awareness about the needs of those with progressive and life threatening illnesses. Learnt to value life and promote quality of life for all patients regardless of illness or stage through advocacy, education and research.

The services provided?
Among the services provided are palliative home care where an assigned nurse, who is supported by members of the interdisciplinary team, which include Palliative Care doctors, a pharmacist, a clinical psychologist, and an occupational therapist work closely together throughout the course of care to find effective solutions to address needs of patients.

The Nurses will carry out assessment of new patients where an open discussion with patients and their families right from the beginning took place to understand how best can home care work to help improve the quality of life of patients.

Assessment is made in the context of physical symptoms, emotional and psychological issues, social issues and the patients’ understanding of the impact of the illness on his/her life.

Other than that, Hospis Malaysia also loan medical equipment to those in need of equipment such as oxygen concentrators, syringe pump, suction machines, nebulizers, pulse oximeters, ripple mattresses, hospital beds, wheelchairs, commodes, sheepskin rugs, air cushions etc. Everything is available to patient without any charge.
